Why does my Vauxhall have an amber warning light?

I have a warning light light on constantly after engine start. The manual says it is the Control indicator for exhaust emission. It’s the amber light above the red park brake light. Is this indicating a component failure or is there a sensor monitoring the emissions and indicating this to be below standard ?
